About the event
How Shall I Live Now in the Unexpected Present, featuring new works by hannah rubin
nina is honored to present How Shall I Live Now in the Unexpected Present, a solo exhibition of photographs by hannah rubin, opening March 7, 2026.
Shot on 35 mm film and taken during the last years of their dog’s life, rubin’s photographs offer uncanny domestic scenes of two bodies in transition. These family portraits are allowed to be some kind of queer; a bathroom counter becomes a blanket, a pair of legs branches into five, a two-headed creature animorphs through embrace, gender is in continual motion. Size and scale are treated as magic realism, body intimacy treated as real. rubin’s close attention to the familiar and the strange create a potent dailyness, somehow preserving the holiness of memory while also showing change as our only constant.
